Dencity’s Staffan Svenson and Bryan Russell
Prior to starting Dencity, Bryan and Staffan were first tennis partners. Both are former varsity college players, at Mississippi State and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, respectively. Out of this grew a friendship, and for many years, they lived as neighbors in the in-town Atlanta neighborhood, Grant Park. Dencity was started in 2000 as a small, urban focused firm. Their first project was an affordable housing project in the University Center district of Atlanta, Georgia. Since then, Dencity has grown to design a diverse body of work including office and restaurant interiors, private residences, and multi-family residences.

While a majority of their work is in the Atlanta area, they have designed residential interiors in the New York City Time Warner Building and vacation homes in the north Georgia Mountains and on the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.

June 4 – August 21, 2011

Since its inception in 1929, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, (MoMA) has been at the forefront of recognizing radical changes in twentieth-century design through its exhibition and collection program. The High will present a selection of works chronicling three key moments in MoMA’s design collection and exhibition history—“Machine Art” (1934); “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” (1941)/”Good Design” (1950-1952); and “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” (1972)—that heralded groundbreaking aesthetic movements and intellectual considerations.

Nearly 150 objects created by over 120 of the most influential artists and designers of the twentieth century will be included. A companion installation, “High Design,” will incorporate 20 works from the High’s growing collection of contemporary design. “Modern by Design” continues a multi-year, multi-exhibition collaboration between the High and the Museum of Modern Art, NY.

I want this micro-exhibition to inspire visitors and open minds to other possibilities. Selecting materials, systems, and finishings are extremely important considerations in architecture and design, and we think Design Is MATERIAL will aid in making that process easy, informative yet fun, and a be rich experience come launch night. Design Is Material has a bright future in the United States, and each year Atlanta will benefit from the excitement to come.”
