Dencity’s Staffan Svenson and Bryan Russell
Prior to starting Dencity, Bryan and Staffan were first tennis partners. Both are former varsity college players, at Mississippi State and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, respectively. Out of this grew a friendship, and for many years, they lived as neighbors in the in-town Atlanta neighborhood, Grant Park. Dencity was started in 2000 as a small, urban focused firm. Their first project was an affordable housing project in the University Center district of Atlanta, Georgia. Since then, Dencity has grown to design a diverse body of work including office and restaurant interiors, private residences, and multi-family residences.

While a majority of their work is in the Atlanta area, they have designed residential interiors in the New York City Time Warner Building and vacation homes in the north Georgia Mountains and on the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.

Stephen Flanagan, Architect, StudioOne Architecture
Stephen Flanagan is the founder and principal of Studio One Architecture, Inc. Since establishing the firm in 2004, Stephen has undertaken a wide array of projects in both commercial and residential sectors throughout the country. In addition to being a registered architect with NCARB certification, Stephen is also a registered interior designer, LEED Accredited Professional (BD&C) as well as an inventor and patent holder, having licensed and sold his own intellectual property. Previous architectural experience has concentrated on larger commercial and institutional work including facilities for healthcare, laboratory sciences, higher education, multi-family housing, and cultural arts facilities.

In addition to writing articles for trade journals, Stephen’s work has been featured in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Living in Atlanta Magazine, Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles, The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, as well as the Modern Atlanta Home Tour. Stephen is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the United States Green Building Council, former Georgia Chapter board member of the International Interior Design Association, and the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture. Stephen is also a noted jewelry designer, photographer, furniture designer, writer, and teacher. He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife and children.

Korean Pavilion, Design Is Human Week in Atlanta, Georgia

Experts and fans of contemporary design had an unprecedented opportunity to learn first-hand about Korean architecture and design. From June 4-12, during Modern Atlanta’s (“MA”) “Design Is Human” Week in Atlanta, MA featured the first Korean pavilion and exhibition of its kind in the US, recognizing the country of South Korea and its highly regarded status and contributions to international design and contemporary culture.

For the first time in its five-year existence, MA presented design excellence from a specific country, Korea, in a dedicated pavilion. The unique Korean Pavilion and Design Exhibition, located in the Two Peachtree Pointe building in Uptown Atlanta, was a major element of MA11, and part of MA’s global strategy to attract a larger international following.

Officials from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea opened the Korean Pavilion on June 6 during a special VIP reception. Entrance to the Korean Pavilion was free and opened to the public.

“Korea is on the forefront of global trends and new developments in contemporary design and architecture,” notes the Consul General of the Republic of Korea, Hae-jin Chun. “We are pleased that this exhibit - as well as other events during the MA11 “Design is Human” Week - introduced some of Korea’s finest architects and designers to a whole new audience in the US, right here in Atlanta.”

New York City-based Manifesto Architecture designed the Korean Pavilion for MA11. Their concept for the Korean Pavilion celebrates the Korean alphabet and is an architectural representation of Korean culture and design.

Manifesto Architecture’s two principals, Jeeyong An and Sang Hwa Lee, first analyzed the science and structural logic of the Korean alphabet. Then, they symbolically translated this into an actual physical structural system where different types of interdependent structural elements manifest themselves into various nuanced functions based on their location and orientation, just like the characters in the Korean alphabet.

The pavilion is made of materials from the Lucent and Marmo collections of HI-MACS® Acrylic Solid Surface, sponsored by LG Hausys, headquartered in Korea, and part of MA11’s Design Is MATERIAL micro-exhibition especially created for the materials industry.

According to MA founding partner, Bernard McCoy, “The Korean Pavilion showcased the diversity and range that best defines Korea’s design industry and strengthens the Made In Korea brand. The exhibition allowed visitors the opportunity to learn about innovation, systems, materials, and practices from a country poised to make its mark in design on the world’s stage.”

The MA Prize
Visitors to the Korean Pavilion also learned about Korea’s design excellence in areas such as architecture, innovative materials, communication art, interior design and visual arts, and here, MA11 also exhibited the winning entries of the ‘MA Prize’, MA’s first international design competition. Appropriately, the theme for this year’s MA Prize was “Architecture By/For/Of Korea”.

The MA Prize entries were carefully selected by a prestigious international jury of practicing architects and scholars, including Kai-Uwe Bergmann (Bjarke Ingels Group, Copenhagen), Sebastien Boissard (Studio Boissard, Paris), Matteo Caimi (C&A Architecture, Milan), Minsuk Cho (Mass Studies, Seoul), Jeeyong An and Sang Hwa Lee (Manifesto Architecture, New York), Sungwan Hong (Forum Design Group, Seoul) and Seung Hyun Woo (Honk Ik University, Seoul).

MAfrique Exhibition in Milan, Italy. A fresh new look at contemporary Africa and Modern Atlanta’s (MA) iSalone del Mobile debut and first collaboration outside the United States.

MA in its first activity outside the United States and in special collaboration with the highly regarded Italian non profit, CEFA Onlus, introduced MAfrique to the over 400,000 visitors attending iSalone. MAfrique, an exhibition about the emergence of contemporary Africa, its architecture, design, visual arts, and talented people. In June 2011, the excitement continued in Atlanta in MA’ology Africa.

In Atlanta, Georgia, MA’ology Africa continued exploring our curiosity and fascination with Africa, and why the west in particular, now more than ever, is looking to Africa’s creative side for inspiration and ideas. MA’ology Africa comprised a fashion runway show, African drummers, documentary photography “The Lost Boys of Nigeria” by acclaimed African-American photographer Presscott McDonald, and the inspiring work of talented African photographer J. ‘Quazi’ King aka Quazimotto.On.Wax.

MA’ology Africa took place in June in Atlanta, Georgia as part of 2011 Design Is Human Week.

Presscott McDonald
Acclaimed fashion and celebrity photographer Presscott McDonald hails orginally from Brooklyn, New York, and now lives and raises his family in Miami, Florida. After attending the Savannah College of Art & Design, he was offered an internship with renowned photographer, Annie Leibovitz.

The direction of McDonald’s new personal work leads him to explore the forgotten and unrecognized of modern society. In “Nigeria’s Lost Boys” project, his documentary work featured at MA’ology Africa and later in the year and strikingly curated by the talented Donnamarie Baptiste, an independent curator that works predominantly in the contemporary art world.

The images depict the commonalities all Nigerians share with the young boys detained in juvenile detention centers such as the Brostal Remand Centre. Brostal is one of three facilities in Nigeria that house its under age law breakers and abandoned boys. The facilities lack both the proper personal health and educational needs to reform the misguided adolescence.

J. ‘Quazi’ King (Quazimotto.On.Wax)
Originally from the West African nation of Equatorial Guinea, Quazi moved to the US for college in 1999. King is a self taught Photographer, “Photography was like a screaming voice in my throat ready to burst out” After loosing the job he held for 6 years, he spent a long time soul searching for clarity and answers about how to apply the concept of loving what you do and getting paid for it.

In MAfrique, a firsthand look into Africa’s creative and contemporary urban culture, MA traveled to the world’s design capital, Milan, Italy, in our first international collaboration outside the United States.

The annual meeting with art and solidarity promoted by CEFA – Il seme della solidarietà Onlus – came to its 5th edition this year at Salone del Mobile di Milano and was listed in the Interni official guide; it aims at widening up the look on the “African world” that featured the previous editions (2007-2009) into the world of African Design and contemporary Architecture.

The MAfrique exhibition journeyed through African creativity, at the discovery of its modern side, still widely unknown to the most. MAfrique shows contemporary Design and Architecture by using texts, images and objects; it demonstrates that the richness of African visual culture, from graphics to archistars clashes with the image of a poor and backward continent. For example the similarity between minimalist buildings and Dogon villages of Mali is so immediate.

A section of MAfrique the exhibition was fully dedicated to a slideshow of images from CEFA’s critcal work in Africa and to the idea of “market”, a typically African place where the life of the villages lights up establishing relationships and unity – although with lots of diversity. “People meet in Architecture” was actually the theme of Biennale di Architettura 2010 and a lot has already been written about it; MAfrique also offered CEFA-branded merchandise, food and music, a further chance of interaction and aggregation.

About CEFA Onlus

CEFA is involved in projects aimed at sustainable development in rural areas with actions in particular aimed at agriculture, livestock, energy and environmental issues, the defence and purifying of water, to which other specific activities of social participation, technical formation and hygiene education.

A specific and carefully followed work targeting state-level administration is carried out through the creation of a number of contacts with Italian local entities of the sector with which consultancy and support programs can prolong themselves beyond the formal end of the projects followed by CEFA. Design Is Human Week Kickoff & Reception

The preview party is your once a year celebration and opportunity to take in a high level of design and creative excellence curated just for you the MA way. It includes a models and renderings exhibitions from some of the regions top architecture studios, product launches for international brands, student work, and the premiere of Design Is Material, a micro-exhibition focusing on materials innovation; and the unveiling of the highly anticipated Korea Pavilion, in a show of East-meets-MA. We even have cupcakes, compliments of Lenox Cupcakes. $10 at the door, or free with MA Home Tour Ticket Purchase/Pass ($40).

“Mass Studies” Talk by Minsuk Cho at Atlanta High Museum

Minsuk Cho founded Mass Studies in 2003 in Seoul, Korea. It is a critical investigation of architecture in the context of mass production, intensely overpopulated urban conditions, and other emergent cultural niches that define contemporary society. Amid the many frictions defining spatial conditions in the twenty-first century—namely past vs. future, local vs. global, utopia vs. reality, and individual vs. collective—Mass Studies focuses on the operative complexity of these multiple conditions, rather than striving for a singular, unified perspective.

Cho has received numerous awards and recently, the Korea Pavilion in Shanghai was awarded the Silver Medal by the B.I.E. in the category of Architectural Design for the World Expo 2010 Shanghai, as well as a Presidential Citation from Korea. Cho’s work was exhibited at La Biennale di Venezia for Dalki Theme Park in 2004, and for Different but Same Houses in 2010. He was also a part of the Open House traveling exhibition from 2006 to 2008 and the New Trends of Architecture in Europe and Asia Pacific 2006–2007 traveling exhibit. Minsuk Cho has been an active lecturer and participant in symposiums all over the world.

Pedini Atlanta showroom presents icon designer Karim Rashid. Rashid is regarded as one of the best designers in his generation and has been featured in Time, Financial Times, The New York Times, Esquire, and GQ for his award-winning designs. His work ranges from everyday products for Method and Dirt Devil to furniture for Artemide and Magis, to brand identities for Citibank and Hyundai, to high tech products for LaCie and Samsung and luxury goods for Veuve Clicquot and Swarovski. Hear what inspires Rashid in his creative process and experience up-close his designs for Bonaldo, Tonelli and Cierre.

Jacek Utko Talk at Atlanta High Musuem

Internationally-acclaimed designer, Jacek Utko will describe the relationship between newspaper and web design and define 15 essentials for creating world-class publications. A fresh approach to combining top design with business strategy and content can completely reshape the product, the process, and the future of the industry. Can newspapers be saved? What can the web learn from print? Jacek Utko has collected more than 40 awards for his redesigns of newspapers, magazines and websites around the world. He was a speaker at the 2009 TED conference, where he delivered the talk, “Can Good Design Save Newspapers?”

Room&Board presents renowned Atlanta-based photo stylist Annette Joseph will take us on a behind-the scenes journey into her work, providing insight on how to make your home’s interior photo-ready and, ultimately, a place you enjoy.


Mah Jong sofa for Roche Bobois

In an exclusive launch and part of Design Is Human kickoff party and reception, Roche Bobois Atlanta will be exhibiting its latest version of the iconic Mah Jong sofa designed by Paris fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier.

Participating showrooms during Design Is Human week are Atlanta’s top new, established, and international brands including (context), Room&Board, Roche Bobois, and Pedini. This special activity is part of the excitement of Design Is Human week and we highly recommend you check them out and make it a big part of your Design Is Human experience too!

5TH Annual Modern Atlanta Home Tour

Among the most popular of Design Is Human week activities and now in its fifth successful year, the 2011 Modern Atlanta Home Tour attracts thousands of fans of contemporary architecture and design to Atlanta. This year’s tour showcases a mix of the city’s latest residential design projects and trends including new sustainable materials and interior design from many of Atlanta’s top design showrooms.

Korean Pavilion makes its premiere at the Design Is Human launch night and design exhibition as a temporary installation demonstrating the diversity and range that best defines Korea’s design industry. As envisioned, the Korea Pavilion allows visitors the opportunity to engage Korean designers and learn about innovation, systems, materials, and practices from a country that is driven to make its mark on the world’s stage.

Some of the most transformative and enduring art works are the ones that take you by surprise, that you stumble across in a strange city or encounter when art is the furthest thing from your mind. Brooklyn-based sound artist and musician Roberto Carlos Lange’s Sounding Up There is one such project. It is created with the intent of slyly creeping up on passerby as they go about their day, entering or exiting the 1180 Peachtree building’s elegant lobby, accessed at 14th street.

The film Inside Piano about a little known building designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano, and follows the daily paths of a series of employees at the world-renowned B&B Italia design firm, giving us an architectural visit from underground to roof. From the Living Architectures series by Ila Beka and Louise Lemoine.

BIG Short Films at Atlanta High Museum

Bjarke Ingels started BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group in 2005 after co-founding PLOT Architects in 2001 and working at OMA in Rotterdam. Through a series of award-winning design projects and buildings, Bjarke Ingels has created an international reputation as a member of a new generation of architects that combine shrewd analysis, playful experimentation, social responsibility and humor. As part of Design Is Human week, MA presents a series of 4 short films and clips highlighting the trailblazing architecture of BIG. BIG Short Films Screenings include Loop City, 8House, MTN, and XPO Bike Ride.

2011 Design Is Human and MA Home Tour official guide

We had so much fun putting this book together for our attendees. Features include exclusive interviews from Atlanta’s creative leaders, international architecture & design, calendar of events, and the highly anticipated 2011 Modern Atlanta Home Tour program. For the fifth straight year, Creative Direction by Kevin Byrd and the talented design team at Armchair.

10UP Public Installation, YAF (Young Architects Forum)

10UP Winner is SYNEDOCHE”s “EDGE CONDITION”. To advocate architecture and encourage artistic endeavors throughout Atlanta in the future, YAF Atlanta (Young Architects Forum) is encouraging the opportunity to design and build a temporary outdoor installation. Codename “10UP CHALLENGE”, this installation for public enjoyment will heighten the purpose and exposure of architecture, in order to construct a more educated and encouraging public. The public is invited to view Edge Condition at the site located at Octane Coffee Lounge, 1009 Marietta Street NE.

Our MA pop-up “Guerrilla” Store has a definite growl to it. It’s fun and one more special way you connect and grow with MA. “We’ve always had this idea of punctuating the MA experience in special partnerships with our various exhibitors during the Design Is Human week, extending our attendees the opportunity to take home a little piece of MA”, says MA founder, Bernard McCoy. In true MA fashion, you can help support MA and enjoy the kinds of unique and beautiful objects that inspire what we do best, bringing people together and showcasing design excellence from around the world. Most of whats on offer at “Guerrilla” are inspired by Design Is Human Week activities and only available in small runs and one ofs, making the procession that more special. Some of our contributors to Guerrilla include MA-edtion kitchen apron (pictured above) with mitts by London-based JAMILY; MA-ology PARIS “action-drawings” by famed illustrator Jarno Kettunen, just to name a few. One more fact about the MA Guerrilla; is to further the careers of young designers, MA dedicates approximately 30% of all its activity to this important sector and wish to elaborate on more.

The MA PRIZE International Design Competition

MA (Modern Atlanta) is please to announce the first self-titled, Modern Atlanta Prize Competition. The prize intends to highlight talented designers and their projects each year under a new and interesting theme. This year’s theme is “Architecture by/for/of Korea and highlight projects, either built or conceptual, that showcase exceptional Korean design talent as well as projects that thoughtfully deal with the unique conditions whether geographical, social, political or cultural, pertaining to Korea. Winners will be announced in 20th May 2011. Prize winning entries and honorable mentions will be exhibited at Korea Pavilion during Design Is Human Week 2011 event to be held 6th to 12th June 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia.
