Plan B Architecture & Urbanism Talk “Imperfect States”

In Imperfect States talk, New Haven-based Plan B Architecture & Urbanism offers an ideal that values the impermanent and the incomplete. Designing is regarded as the continuing and augmenting of past actions. It embraces multiples over the singular, the improvisational over the deterministic, the indefinite over the finite.
Bimal Mendis, is Assistant Dean at Yale University School of Architecture. Joyce Hsiang is a Critic at Yale School of Architecture. Mendis and Hsiang are principals of Plan B Architecture & Urbanism, a research and design collaborative engaged in the investigation and development of urban infrastructures.
Design Is Human Week Academia Exclusive! YALE

YALE School of Architecture (YSOA) TALK “Patternism and Technology at YSOA”
YSOA Panel Discussion “Visualization/Internationalization in Design Pedagogy”

Each year MA invites top international institutions of design to participate in Design Is Human Week elevated activities. For 2012, we are extremely excited to welcome the prestigious and internationally-acclaimed Yale School of Architecture. What we didn’t foresee was how enthusiastic (and collaborative) Yale would be in what we consider to be (props to Dean Robert Stern) an historic moment and as further proof of the international acceptance of Design Is Human Week and our intrinsic values to a high quality of life and interlacing creative culture. To our delight, Yale wanted to do two separate activities addressing its preoccupations in architecture/design, Yale Talk at the High Museum of Art, and a Panel Discussion taking place at MA Design Exhibition/MA Home Tour launch night.

YSOA’s talk Patternism and Technology at YSOA, makes the case that at a point when digital architecture is nearly two decades old, the Yale School of Architecture has invested heavily in the next generation of hardware and software, allowing its students and faculty to explore what robotics and algorithmic software might mean for the next generation of architects and forever changing the frontier of our built environment.
Free admission. Limited seating and early RSVP now being accepted, contact antonella@modern-atlanta.org

In the Yale panel discussion Visualization/Internationalization in Design Pedagogy, explores the internationalization or proliferation of technology, and in particular how technology has resulted in ever widening applications, techniques, platforms, methodologies and audiences for visualization.
Open admission to MA Design Exhibition/ MA Home Tour attendees only.

Welcome to modern Atlanta, design hub of the southeast

The highly sought tour is also a shining example of Atlanta unleashing its creative powers for a new language of bold urbanism to the rest of the nation. Modern Atlanta Home Tour examines the full vernacular of modern residential design currently seen in Atlanta, from the cutting-edge with the use of new sustainable materials and digital technology, all the way back to the post-modern era when architecture was inspired by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles & Ray Eames.

In this MA exclusive Yale-led panel discussion asks the question, what are the larger implications on contemporary visual culture?
Visual representation is intrinsic to the education of the designer. Its role in facilitating and communicating a design idea is indispensable to the intentions of the designer. Evolving beyond conventional two-dimensional hand drawing, which has defined architectural production for generations, visual representation now encompasses digital, three dimensional and interactive strategies. What is the future of visualization in pedagogy as it continues to radically transform the process of design and its production?

Panel Discussion starts at 7:30pm - 8:15pm, arrive early, limited seating. Moderated by AIA Atlanta with a three member panel consisting of industry experts from Yale School of Architecture and Atlanta-based architecture/design professionals.

The (Short) Story of MINI

Roughly 50 years of fun and motoring have all added up to this: hundreds of innovations, thousands of checkered flags, millions sold, legions of devoted fans and one International Car of the Century award. Here’s how it happened:

A Familiar Dilemma
The year was 1957, and in post-World War II England the Suez Canal Crisis had sent fuel prices soaring, leading many to start wondering if the large, gas-guzzling vehicles of the day made much sense. This led Sir Leonard Lord of the Morris Company to issue his top engineer, Alec Issiogonis, a challenge: design and build a small, fuel-efficient car capable of carrying four adults, within economic reach of just about anyone. As fate would have it, the challenge of fitting so much function into such a small package inspired a couple of historic innovations.

MINI history. Image MINI USA.

Revolutionary ideas
The two most important innovations Issiogonis came up with were to create more room in the cockpit; pushing the wheels all the way out to the corners and turning the engine sideways. The world had never seen a car quite like it. When the MINI first launched in 1959, the public was quite baffled.

Soon enough, people began to recognize that the MINI was not merely a car. The unique combination of style at a low-cost, small size and nimble handling came to symbolize independence and spontaneity. The very essence of the youthful 1960’s. It was a whole way of life.

MINI history. Image MINI USA.

A cultural phenomenon
One of the most remarkable elements of the MINI’s popularity was how its infectious spirit transcended traditional class barriers. From hipsters and mods to milkmen, rock stars and royalty to rally racers. Everyone could have fun and feel free motoring in a MINI.

It also soon became apparent that Issiogonis’s numerous layout innovations, intended to create more passenger room, also happened to help make the MINI incredibly fun to drive. Wheels at the corners meant a wide, go-kart stance and nimble handling. The transverse engine kept weight over the front tires, helping provide great balance and grip.

MINI history. Image MINI USA.

Birth of a racer
It was 1961 when the humble little people-mover fell into the hands of John Cooper. A bigger, more powerful engine, bigger brakes and a few tuning tweaks later, the MINI Cooper 997 was introduced and a rally demon was born. Before long, the nimble little MINI was outlasting the larger, more powerful, but clumsier sedans of the day. Visits to the winner’s circle became a regular event as MINI chalked up numerous international race wins – including 3 at the prestigious Monte Carlo rally from 1964 to 1967.

MINI history. Image MINI USA.

You-nique
In addition to being exhilarating to drive, owners loved how easily their MINI would become an extension of themselves. MINI was, and still is today, a statement of their unique individuality, a personality-packed sidekick that is always up for a bit of fun.
By 1969, over 2 million MINIs had been sold around the world. Pickups and station wagon versions were introduced and all were incredibly durable – whether rallying or doing the daily errands. Every owner knew they could depend on their MINI to get the job done and smile the entire time.

Everywhere but america
By 1977, MINI’s popularity had truly taken off around the world with over 4 million cars sold in each corner of the globe. Sadly, Americans never quite got the chance to catch the fever since new emissions regulations in the late 1960’s forced MINI to give up its U.S. green card. Fast forward to 1999. Over 5 million Classic MINIs had found happy homes around the world leading a panel of 130 international automotive journalists to vote MINI “European Car of the Century.” In fact, only Ford’s Model T received more votes for the global title.

The next evolution
In October of 1999, just a few days before the final Classic MINI rolled off the production line, the concept for a new MINI was unveiled at the Paris Auto Show. The distinctive design and personality was immediately recognizable and it was clear that the new model took a healthy dose of automotive steroids.

Making its US debut in March of 2002, the new MINI was bigger, stronger and faster than ever. Slalom tests prove that this surprisingly affordable head-turner hasn’t lost a step and it now ranks among the world’s top performance vehicles.

MINI made its US debut in March of 2002. Image MINI USA.

More than just a car
Taking the 2003 North American Car of the Year, the general public and auto enthusiasts alike found the new MINI hard to resist. Invoking smiles and curiosity everywhere they go, new owners quickly discover just how much fun a MINI can be. Owners personalize their MINIs to their hearts’ content and form motoring clubs all across the country.

Around the world, the MINI phenomenon has been reborn for all the same reasons its predecessor was such a success. Its great fuel efficiency and practicality, an incredible set of custom options, unbelievably tight handling and an undeniably cheeky personality – people easily fall in love. So what will the next 50 years of motoring hold? We can’t wait to find out.

“Design Liquidity in the Age of the Network Economy”

Talk Description
For the past decade Gage/ Clemenceau Architects (Mark Foster Gage and Marc Clemenceau Bailly) has been on the forefront of redefining design through computational and material innovation, and is a leading voice in a generation of architects theorizing these revolutionary developments.

Formichetti concept. Image courtesy Gage/Clemenceau Architects

In his lecture, Design Liquidity, Mr. Bailly suggests that while these emerging technologies and materials will produce vast advances in structural, environmental and physical performance, so too will they usher in a new world of trans-disciplinary collaboration between currently distant fields.

Estonian Academy of Art. Image courtesy Gage/Clemenceau Architects

With Design Liquidity, Bailly challenges current design practices and enlists new players into the architectural and design equation by illustrating his own collaborations between architecture and design, and biology, fashion, robotics, environmental science, software programming, automotive styling and material engineering.

“Design Liquidity” Gage/Clemenceau & Formichetti Collaboration

During 2011, Gage / Clemenceau Architects collaborated on the design and production of a temporary installation for Lady Gaga
fashion director, Nicola Formichetti, Creative Director for Mugler as well as fashion stylist to Uniqlo, MAC and V Magazine.

Gage/ Clemeneau installation for Nicola Formichetti the featured original Formichetti designs for Lady Gaga. Image courtesy Gage/Clemenceau Architects

This collaboration produced an installation that experimentally fused ideas from both fashion and architecture into a new type of physical environment, accessible to the general public, for a two week period coinciding with Fashion Week in New York City, in September 2011. The stakes for this particular installation are high– as it will be housing not only the latest in Formichetti’s work, but will also include several original ensembles he has designed for Lady Gaga who has worn them in her performances and various red-carpet events.

Bar Alto was first launched 2011 during London Design Festival as the first installment of a new series of events organized by London-based DesignMarketo.

As a direct reference to Milan’s famous Bar Basso (visited by many designers during the Salone del Mobile international design fair in Milan), DesignMarketo will offer its Atlanta public a variety of specially selected brews and cocktails, including the famous Negroni.

For Bar Alto London, DesignMarketo invited Maurizio Stochetto, owner of Bar Basso in Milan, to come over and teach how to prepare Negronis… Negroni is basically 1/3 of Campari, 1/3 of Martini and 1/3 of Gin—it’s a variant of the Americano, invented by the Count of Negroni who wanted something a little stronger…

Given the number of smiles on the visitors faces in London, we think DesignMarketo will bring that Milanese spirit to Design Is Human Week too! In preparation for DesignMarketo’s Bar Alto in Atlanta, our cocktail-expert friends at The Sound Table Restaurant have been recruited to helped behind the bar and create an American-eto specially for DesignMarketo!

Long-time Bar Alto collaborator, London-based designer Harry Thaler, will design the space in Atlanta. Bar Alto Atlanta will be located at Space2, located next to The Sound Table restaurant in the newly-created Edgewood Design District.

Internationally recognized as a design icon, since 1939, Duralex has been manufacturing original tempered glassware and tabletop products for over 80 years in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin in the very heart of France. The original tempered (toughened) Picardie glasses are still produced in France and are known as the “original French tumblers”. Duralex is the only glass manufacturer that makes 100% of their products in France.

In the talk “Diversion/Conversion —in Architecture/Design between Industry and Craft”, Paris-based architect and designer Sébastien Boissard will question the transversality and interface between various domains of architecture and design and explore some of the influences of the industry with giants like Pierre Chareau, Jean Prouvé who built Historic architectural landmarks in the 20th century. We will take a look at past and present technological advances and their impact on architecture and design, and study some of the challenges and contradictions particularly on the construction: naval, automobile, buildings…Should we hope that there will be a process that produce interaction between industries and crafts creating a framework to improve quality of products and space for a more “democratic” arena?

Before establishing “Studio Boissard”, Sébastien Boissard collaborated with Philippe Starck and Martin Francis (2003-2008), where he was in charge of designing “A”, a yacht of 119 meters (390 feet), and participated in the development of Mama Shelter Hotel in Paris. His experience in ship design led him to work with Rémi Tessier on a yacht of 81 meters, followed in 2010-11 by “Studio Boissard’s” design of a yacht of 140 meters. In that time, “Studio Boissard” rehabilitated a house and private apartments in Paris, and since 2008, Mr. Boissard has taught 4th year interior and product design at “Ecole Camondo” in a transversal studio. Here, he recently developed a research module on construction, which imparts to students an organic awareness of their relationship to building systems.

Sébastien Boissard’s multidisciplinary training and design experience has allowed him to successfully work on a wide range of projects.

About Living Architectures

Living Architectures is a series of films that seek to develop a way of looking at architecture which turns away from the current trend of idealizing the representation of our architectural heritage. The cult of perfect, disembodied forms entirely devoid of people, inevitably leads to a breakup between architecture and living space.

Through these films, Ila Beka and Louise Lemoine put into question the fascination with the picture, which covers up the buildings with preconceived ideas of perfection, virtuosity and infallibility, in order to demonstrate the vitality, fragility, and vulnerable beauty of architecture as recounted and witnessed by people who actually live in, use or maintain the spaces they have selected. Thus, their intention is to talk about architecture, or rather to let architecture talk to us, from an “inner” point of view, both personal and subjective.

Unlike most movies about architecture, these films focus less on explaining the building, its structure and its technical details than on letting the viewer enter into the invisible bubble of the daily intimacy of some icons of contemporary architecture.>br>
Through a series of moments and fragments of life, an unusually spontaneous portrait of the building would emerge. This experience presents a new way of looking at architecture which broadens the field of its representation.

“Imperfect States” —Projects by Plan B Architecture & Urbanism

The talk “Imperfect States” put claim to the fact the we live in a less than perfect world. Economic instability, political turmoil, environmental crises, rising oil prices, overpopulation and rapid urbanization are just a few of the daunting issues that weigh heavily on our thoughts and actions. But these real and unavoidable exigencies are also the qualities that set each site and scenario apart as distinctive, unique, even beautiful. They can be thought of instead as opportunities, for agency, adaptation and action.

Plan B Architecture & Urbanism

The imperfect state offers an ideal that values the impermanent and the incomplete. Designing is regarded as the continuing and augmenting of past actions. It embraces multiples over the singular, the improvisational over the deterministic, the indefinite over the finite.

World Indexer, Plan B Architecture & Urbanism

Plan B Architecture & Urbanism thrives within these contingencies, applying architectural thinking, analysis and design to consider and reconfigure larger global forces at play through a broad range of interventions at multiple scales. Their projects engage in unfamiliar yet important territories of design practice, whether through their work to: map, model, and display the development of the entire world; index sustainability in urban areas; develop a spatial planning strategy for a country that is projected to be eradicated by rising sea levels; plan and preserve an island to counter the effects of rapid urbanization; create a tidal park for a local community; or design a natural retreat for writer. In an imperfect state, Plan B is the new status quo.

About Plan B Architecture & Urbanism

Plan B Architecture & Urbanism was co-founded by Joyce Hsiang and Bimal Mendis in Rotterdam in 2008 and is currently based in New Haven, Connecticut. Plan B’s multi-disciplinary team and creative environment promotes a culture of interchange and collaboration. To leverage resources, expertise and intelligence, Plan B works with a constellation of external consultants, engineers, planners and policy makers. They received a Hines Research Grant for Advanced Sustainability in Architecture, an AIA Upjohn Research Grant, and were finalists for the Latrobe Prize. Their designs, research and writing has been widely published and exhibited and was most recently featured in the 2011 Chengdu Architecture Biennale and the 2011 Eye on Earth Summit in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Panel Discussion “Visualization -in Design Pedagogy”

Moderated by AIA Atlanta

MA Design Exhibition & MA Home Tour Launch Event
Friday, 8 June
7:30pm - 8:15pm
Atlanta, GA 30305

In this Yale-led panel discussion, visual representation is intrinsic to the education of the designer. Its role in facilitating and communicating a design idea is indispensable to the intentions of the designer. Evolving beyond conventional two-dimensional hand drawing, which has defined architectural production for generations, visual representation now encompasses digital, three dimensional and interactive strategies. The proliferation of technology in particular has resulted in ever widening applications, techniques, platforms, methodologies and audiences for visualization. These new and emerging forms of visualization demand integrated thinking at multiple scales, combining complex geometries, informational systems, geospatial data and parametric modeling. Whether dictating the precision of tectonic details, developing a series of iterative plans, or addressing the complexity of environmental systems, visualization acts as the crucial interface between designers and their consultants, clients and communities. What is the future of visualization in pedagogy as it continues to radically transform the process of design and its production? And what are the larger implications on contemporary visual culture?

Robots in School -Technology and the Next Generation of Architects

Saturday, 9 June
High Museum of Art
2:15pm - 3:00pm
Hill Auditorium
1280 Peachtree Street NE
Atlanta, GA 30309

In this Yale talk presented by architect Brennan Buck, new technologies are fundamentally changing the way buildings are designed and what they can do for the people who use them. The Yale School of Architecture has invested heavily in the next generation of hardware and software, allowing its students and faculty to explore what robotics and ‘algorithmic’ software might mean for the buildings and cities of the future. Students are designing complex sculptural forms, lush patterns and complex organizations with the help computers and computer-controlled tools.

Digital and robotic fabrication research at YSOA.

Design and fabrication technologies are simultaneously evolving faster than ever and opening up to allow architects to engage them more directly, imagining new manufacturing and construction processes and creating new forms and materials. Brennan Buck, critic at the Yale School of Architecture, will discuss the experimentation currently underway at Yale and the potential impact of evolving technology for the next generation of architects.

About Design Within Reach
Design Within Reach, Inc., founded in 1998 and headquartered in Connecticut, is a retailer of distinctive modern furniture and well-designed objects that enrich daily life. We market and sell our products to both residential and commercial customers in the continental U.S., as well as in Hawaii and Canada. At DWR, we present our assortment in an educational context, providing detailed information about the designer and key functional elements about each product.

From iconic mid-20th-century works to innovative items designed today, Design Within Reach is the source for fully licensed classics. We sell clean and simple products, representing ideas, materials and processes that span categories and countries. What we mean by a “fully licensed classic” is that it’s manufactured by the company holding the license to the original design. Examples of these companies include Herman Miller®, Knoll®, Cassina, Fritz Hansen, and Verpan.
Authenticity is something we’re proud to offer; elitism, however, is not. Visit any of our Studios, and you’ll never see a “Do Not Touch” sign. We invite customers to linger, bring their dog or kids and join us for design events. At our website, www.dwr.com, customers can shop our complete assortment and find additional finishes and styles not shown in our books or Studios.

Whether customers experience DWR by Studio, phone or online, they receive knowledgeable assistance from people who come from design backgrounds.

At DWR, we’re passionate about design.

The Bread Workshops—an ongoing interview with Jackson Lam and designer Alexandre Bettler

JL: What inspired you to start the bread workshop?
AB: Two things: For my dissertation at the RCA, i wanted first to research about Tea, as i was interested in the fact that it has an important role both in Japan and Uk, both countries that I like the design and traditions from. So I researched about it but couldnt go very far. But I also found out about Japanese ceramics and I specially appreciated the concept of being able to do individual mass production. That connected with my interest in medium size production (mainly in printing industry). I then found out about the bread (baking as a way to individually mass produce, both bread and ceramics).
What is the RCA?

FoodMarketo BreadWorkshop in Milan, Italy

I then found out about the co-pain idea about friends and started to see a connection with my concepts of communication, and my interests not on the design but more on the process to arrive there. One of the sentence i really like about communication comes from my mum and I think it is a very important rule for design: The important is not what you say, but what the other understands. So good! So, I found out that the best thing to get to that level of communication is to get the Receiver to design the message. By doing this, I could make sure that he (but also people of his same level/language/understanding) will understand it perfectly.

BreadWorkshop creators, DesignMarketo founders Jerome Giraud and Alexandre Bettler

The dissertation also meant finishing the RCA soon and the need to find what I wanted to do after. I knew I wanted to stay in London for a bit (nowhere else to go, really) and that I would need to find a job. Having worked in different design studios before my MA, I knew I didnt want to work for someone else. So I thought the best is to give myself a job! And I thought about the workshops (we used to have a lot at ECAL, in Lausanne) and thought it would be good to invent my own job and get universities and schools to employ me. And it works, slowly! Of course this is not my main income, but it is a very valuable part of my work as it allows complete freedom and creativity. No client, no deadline, just (serious) pleasure.

Bread Workshop at Barbican in London. Image and image courtesy DesignMarketo

So the Bread Workshops are the combinations of both ideas. I set the brief and get the students to invent the answers. The subtitle of the workshop is ‘A pan European / Pain Européen Project’. It is a play on words on the word Pan (which means bread in spanish and latin as well as Across) and the word Pain (Bread in French). So the idea is to make something like a recipe book of the different bread styles across Europe, together with the different ‘design’ styles found in corresponding countries. So far this ‘bread/design recipe book’ includes Italy, Spain, Scotland, London, Belarus (and France soon).

Young Architects Forum (YAF) Atlanta Chapter, MA, and Beltline Atlanta are excited in announcing the winner of the third annual 10UP International Architecture Competition.

Three years ago, the executive directors and founders of MA asked YAF to create a competition for a temporary outdoor installation which would act as a beacon for “Design is Human Week”. The project would not only accentuate the series of events organized by MA, but would be an event of its own celebrating young talents by exhibiting their work to the public. That competition is 10UP 2012.

10UP Challenge
The challenge, create a temporary structure with a base no greater than 10’x10’ that will materialize and dematerialize in less than 24 hours.

2011 10Up Winner ‘Edge Condition’ (l). 2010 10Up Winner ‘Periscope’ (r). Images MA

Now in its third year, the past two winners, Periscope and Edge Condition, were unexpected successes that appeared in multiple international design publications and exhibits. This year’s winner will once again be surprising, innovative and daring.

This year Modern Atlanta (MA) and YAF Atlanta have teamed up with Atlanta BeltLine Inc. to create a temporary installation on the Atlanta BeltLine. The largest development of its kind in the United States, the Atlanta BeltLine demonstrates the power of design to shape on an enormous scale. At the heart of the Atlanta BeltLine is an integrated approach to land use, transportation, greenspace and sustainable development that will create a framework for future growth in the City of Atlanta. By attracting and organizing some of the region’s future growth around parks, transit, and trails, the BeltLine will help change the pattern of regional sprawl in the coming decades and lead to a vibrant and livable Atlanta with an enhanced quality of life.
Here we go and congratulations to this year’s winner and all runner ups.

Project: A TENSIGRITY AVIARY ‘What will live here?’
Architecture & Design: Tim Frank & Chip Clark
Location: Atlanta, Georgia (United States)

Simply put, the Atlanta Beltline is second to none. As a twenty-two mile linear park and the longest arboretum in the world, it is a ground-breaking urban plan that doubly generates intensified densities within the city while also restoring the natural tree cover and wildlife habitats that were devastated by 20th century sprawl. Our project aims to celebrate such innovative thinking in the realm of urban renewal and seeks to educate the 2012 MA (Modern Atlanta) audience about the Beltline as its sets high values in the area of urban design and offers such widespread positive impact to the City of Atlanta. Instead of providing a name for this project, we instead reinforce the same important question of culture and environment that has been pursued by the designers of the Beltline…What will live here?

Like the Beltline, the installation seeks to join together the Atlanta community with indigenous wildlife through the construction of a tensegrity canopy. Tensegrity is a structural principle based on the use of compressive components inside a net of continuous tension. In this case, the tensegrity structure will double as a temporary bird habitat. The wood compressive elements in this canopy will serve as bird feeders while the net of tension elements will serve as bird perches. Due to the lightness of such a system, it is ideal for a project that requires such rapid deployment.

The canopy is comprised of eight interconnected tensegral icosahedron modules symmetrically decreasing in scale as they cantilever from the center of the site along the axis of the Beltline. The icosahedron modules will be fabricated and connected at an offsite facility so to calibrate the structural dynamics of the system prior to being transported to the site. The mocked up canopy will be field verified by a structural engineer to ensure the structure conforms to specification.

Once the engineering review is complete, the canopy will be demounted and transported to the site where it will be re-installed over the course of twenty-four hour period. The installation sequence includes the connection of eight modules on the ground using temporary scaffolding. Once the eight modules are joined, the long span canopy will be jacked into place and the supporting columns will be secured below.

Once installed, the lightweight aviary cloud will float overhead, just out of reach, cantilevering over fifty feet beyond its small 10’ x 10’ footprint. Celebrating the Beltline’s conservation of green space while embracing community density, the installation will serve as a place of cohabitation between local birds species and design enthusiasts. The structure will invoke the repetition and axiality of the former rail while looking forward to the revitalization of Atlanta’s wildlife habitats. In the spirit of the Beltline, the industrial noise of the heavy rail will be replaced by the sound of the song bird, in turn calling us to canopy the once downtrodden space in celebration of its renewed life.

Atlanta BeltLine, 2012 10Up Site
The Atlanta BeltLine is a comprehensive redevelopment and mobility project that will shape the way Atlanta grows throughout the next several decades. The project provides a network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit along a historic 22-mile railroad corridor circling downtown and connecting 45 neighborhoods directly to each other. The Atlanta BeltLine is the most comprehensive economic development effort ever undertaken in the City of Atlanta and among the largest most wide-ranging redevelopment projects currently underway in the United States.

Bringing life back to this abandonded rail line before and during construction is a priority of Atlanta BeltLine, Inc., the non-profit corporation responsible for developing the Atlanta BeltLine. As such they have generously provided a section of the Atlanta Beltline at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Bill Kennedy Way.

Welcome! Design Is MATERIAL2

Following last year’s successful launch of Design Is MATERIAL, the simple idea behind the continuation of MA’s ‘Design is Material2 traveling exhibition is to feature both renowned and obscure products to the broader design scene in an aim to peak interest and curiosities around materials in the architectural and design industries.

Design Is Material Installation at 2011 Design Is Human and MA launch event.

In 2011, the exhibit was kept quite simple with a focus on innovative specifiable materials on the market with a few ‘teaser’ products to evoke the question of what an architectural material might become if acquired from other industries such as industrial and automotive design.

Design Is Material2: Round Bicycle Tubes by Beck Textile Studio.

According to HOK Senior Designer and DIM2 co-curator John Cantrell, “Materiality has always been a fundamental source of dialogue in architecture and design, and even within the industry there is quite a few differences in opinion about the “right and wrong” ways to use or apply materials in the context of the environment, the story the environment tells, and whether pragmatic or artistic ideas are most important.”

Design Is MATERIAL2 curators, interior designer (l) Weronika Cichosz and John Cantrell (l), Senior Designer at HOK, visits Armchair’s Kevin Byrd

Bold Ideas. Innovative Solutions. Amazing Stories to Inspire.
This year our curators have created a fun installation that brings sustainability to the front where it matters most….material choices. There are five categories in our methodology that fall into Raw, Specify, DIY, Object, and Process.

Design Is Material2: Kirei board by Kirei.

HD Home “Terra & Colors” is Chimica Italia revolutionary new resin product. www.accadi.net

Raw
Raw will consist of a range of raw, organic and inorganic materials that have immediate or obvious application and the use falls into the realm of the creator.

Specifiy
Specify will mostly be innovative specifiable materials that are new to the architecture and design market and can be purchased, applied, or specified from a manufacturer.

‘Green Roof’ Architecture system.

Design Is Material2: Layers Park Double by Maharam.

DIY
For DIY, we will mostly be taking everyday and easily accessible materials with simple instruction or direction to either create a raw material itself, or take a raw material and transform it into another use than it’s intended purpose.

Object
With the Object category, most of our focus has been collecting selected work from artists and designers around the globe whose story and concept for the piece was about the material from which the object was made, thereby giving the audience an understanding of translation between how designers think and make.

Design Is Material2: EcoCradle mushroom packaging by Ecovative

Process
Last but not least, we are including a category on material Process, which will allow users to not only think about materials as individual products in themselves, but rather how most architects and designers manipulate materials with tools and processes at their conceptual disposal in fabrication such as CNC, Laser-Cut, Water-Jet, and 3D Printing.

Materiality in Ceramics. 2010 Design Is Human exhibitor and Copenhagen-based, ceramicists Claydies repesents the new attitude in Danish design.

As intellectual as we’ve been about the collection of the items to show this year, at the end of the day we think that our job is to feature the items in exciting ways that trigger the innate imagination and attraction to objects and materiality in hopes that viewers can take those items and continue the dialogue for themselves.

The Netherlands is a tiny country in which land is man-made from water. Populated in high density, Dutch designers have creating connections, organization and the vision that anything is makeable in their core.

As part of the unpredicted excitement that has come to define Design Is Human Week, Dutch Profiles film screenings will take place at High Museum of Art and Space2 located in the newly formed Edgewood Design District.

Rem Koolhaas OMA (Architecture)

Profile: Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Image courtesy DutchDFA.

The iconic buildings of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, OMA, and its core principles as embodied by Rem Koolhaas, have gained worldwide attention since it’s foundation in 1975. The philosophy and aesthetic developed for competition submissions for and the Centre for Art and Mediatechnology in Karlsruhe, La Villette, the Jussieu campus and the Très Grande Biblioteque in Paris, garnered frenzied international attention and were finally realised in De Kunsthal in Rotterdam. Rem Koolhaas’ intensive conceptual thinking about architecture and social circumstances ran simultaneously from the very early stages of his career. With a background in journalism and scriptwriting - his curiosity, research and urge to analyze are basics of his and OMA’s working process. It is this approach that makes him a highly debated thinker and architect - although he staunchly refutes the label “Starchitect”.

Rem Koolhaas OMA. Image courtesy DutchDFA.

This image, he feels, blinds the public to a clear view of what his and OMA’s work is really about. Casa da Musica in Porto provides a valuable steppingstone for one of OMA’s latest commissioned projects, the Taipei Performing Arts Centre. Treatment of form, innovative techniques, and the celebration of context are key elements of the design. Rather than relocating the roaring Shilin night market from the site of the forthcoming Taipei centre, OMA will instead build its 3 theatres above the market. The vibrant, dynamic culture of the East forms a crucial element in Koolhaas’ pre-occupation with Asia. As a child he lived in Indonesia for several years. This experience is central to his current fascination with the region – and its architecture. Koolhaas’ seminal 1978 book Delirious New York, a Retroactive Manifesto, explores the Culture of Congestion in the big city. Nowadays, his focus is shifting to the wider consequences of the rapid growth of mega-cities.

Profile: Renny Ramaker, co founder at Droog. Image courtesy DutchDFA.

In the beginning of the nineties, a group of young dutch designers was presented in Milaan under the name of DROOG. Their designs were immediately recognized as something new. Anti-glamour, sober yet funny, and all telling a story or commenting on society. For a while, DROOG design even became synonymous with dutch design. Founders of this collective are Gijs Bakker and Renny Ramakers.

Many of the early DROOG designs found their way to galleries and museums all over the world. They became icons, sometimes crossing the line between art and design. One of the very first to acquire them was the museum of modern art in New York. Since the beginning, Droog has evolved. It has become more of a thinktank under the name of drooglab, which aims to detect global trends in design, and then reflect on those trends from a new perspective.

Wim Crouwel is the grand seigneur of the Dutch design world. Now, at the age of 83, he can look back on a extremely productive caree…As a highly influential designer…As one of the founders of Total Design, Holland’s first real multi-disciplinary design studio… a studio in which complex issues were analysed from different angles offering a totally integrated and systematic design solution…
As a professor, educating generations of students at the Technical University of Delft…And as a director of the renowned Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam…

Wimm Crouwel. Image courtesy DutchDFA.

Crouwel is especially admired for his systematic approach in which the use of grids plays a very important role in his lay-outs. Here Wim Crouwel and the prominent design critic Max Bruinsma visit an exhibition on 100 years of poster design at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Since the beginning of his career, Wim Crouwel has been strongly influenced by the modernist notion of Functionalism. The principle that architects should design a building based on the purpose of that building. Wim Crouwel designed posters, brochures and catalogues for 2 major art museums, first for the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven - and from 1964 to 1985 for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. When he started to work for the Stedelijk Museum he took a totally different path than his predecessor, director and designer Willem Sandberg. In 1956 Crouwel saw the results of the first digital typesetter. They looked so bad that he designed a type face, called New Alphabet, that better suited the capacities of this machine. In 1973 visionary Wim Crouwel - influenced by the early digital developments at the time - introduced the term Form Preparation.

Hella Jongerius received worldwide recognition for her Soft Urn in 1994. A traditional vase made out of rubber. Her work, including this knitted lamp or this embroidered tablecloth is exposed all over the world including MoMa New York. Jongerius is famous for using traditional craftsmanship to create something completely new.
Jongerius has a love/hate relationship with the mass-production industry but nevertheless decided to corporate with companies like Vitra or Ikea. In her philosophy, mass production and craftsmanship can go hand in hand. For over two years, Jongerius has been developing a new range of colors for Swiss furniture giant Vitra.

In 2002, Maarten Baas graduated with Smoke at the famous Design Academy in Eindhoven. Smoke is a series in which design classics are scorched with a blow torch and then sealed with epoxy – a project which gained him worldwide attention. His studio is based in a farm in the South of Holland where he works with a small group of international craftsmen – a talented and diverse community in which each member contributes something unique to the final product.

In 2009, Baas was named Designer of the Year at Design Miami. To Baas’s great satisfaction, it was precisely this personal, small-scale and collaborative approach which the jury applauded. In Milan in 2009, Baas presented his project Real Time: a series of videos depicting hyper-physical representations of time. The project questions our ambiguous relationship with time in our profoundly temporal world.

Designer Christien Meindertsma rose to fame quickly with her book PIG 05049, developed in 2007. The book is an extensive collection of photographic images that catalogue an astounding array of products of which various parts of a single pig were utilized in the production process. With her designs Christien Meindertsma aims to revive the understanding of production processes that often have become so distant to our modern, industrialized world.

For her 2003 graduation project at the Eindhoven Design Academy Christien Meinderstma created “One-sheep-sweaters” with the intention of forging authentic relationships between the product and the consumer. Currently Christien is working on a project with Flax, a plant of strong Dutch origins. For this project she has followed the process of flax cultivation and has proceeded to buy a whole flax harvest from the plot of a Dutch farmer in the Flevopolder region.
