April 2011. Destination: Milan, design capital of the world. Where: iSalone del Mobile, the worlds largest design event for the trade. Mission: Africa.

MAfrique Exhibition in Milan, Italy. A fresh new look at contemporary Africa and Modern Atlanta’s (MA) iSalone del Mobile debut and first collaboration outside the United States.

MA in its first activity outside the United States and in special collaboration with the highly regarded Italian non profit, CEFA Onlus, introduced MAfrique to the over 400,000 visitors attending iSalone. MAfrique, an exhibition about the emergence of contemporary Africa, its architecture, design, visual arts, and talented people. In June 2011, the excitement continued in Atlanta in MA’ology Africa.

MA’ology Africa

In Atlanta, Georgia, MA’ology Africa continued exploring our curiosity and fascination with Africa, and why the west in particular, now more than ever, is looking to Africa’s creative side for inspiration and ideas. MA’ology Africa comprised a fashion runway show, African drummers, documentary photography “The Lost Boys of Nigeria” by acclaimed African-American photographer Presscott McDonald, and the inspiring work of talented African photographer J. ‘Quazi’ King aka Quazimotto.On.Wax.

MA’ology Africa took place in June in Atlanta, Georgia as part of 2011 Design Is Human Week.

MA’ology Africa was a fundraiser for the humanitarian relief agency CARE International in support of CARE’s mission empowering women and children in need in Africa and indeed around the world. To learn more about CARE, click here

MA’ology Africa was inspiring and presented fresh perspectives, because for the first time we journeyed to a different Africa, one that is contemporary, international, and sophisticated.

In curating the fashion for MA’ology Africa, Jeffrey’s (Jeffrey New York/Atlanta) inspiration for contemporary Africa focused on collections that are bold, courageous, and likes confidence, ranging from the beautiful bold jewelry of acclaimed eco jewelry designer Monique Pean to the bright Spring/Summer collections from the likes of Prada, Lanvin, Dries Van Noten, Marni, and other top designer brands.

Photography

Presscott McDonald
Acclaimed fashion and celebrity photographer Presscott McDonald hails orginally from Brooklyn, New York, and now lives and raises his family in Miami, Florida. After attending the Savannah College of Art & Design, he was offered an internship with renowned photographer, Annie Leibovitz.

The direction of McDonald’s new personal work leads him to explore the forgotten and unrecognized of modern society. In “Nigeria’s Lost Boys” project, his documentary work featured at MA’ology Africa and later in the year and strikingly curated by the talented Donnamarie Baptiste, an independent curator that works predominantly in the contemporary art world.
“Lost Boys of Nigeria”, documentary work of photographer Presscott McDonald. MA’ology Africa

The images depict the commonalities all Nigerians share with the young boys detained in juvenile detention centers such as the Brostal Remand Centre. Brostal is one of three facilities in Nigeria that house its under age law breakers and abandoned boys. The facilities lack both the proper personal health and educational needs to reform the misguided adolescence.

J. ‘Quazi’ King (Quazimotto.On.Wax)
Originally from the West African nation of Equatorial Guinea, Quazi moved to the US for college in 1999. King is a self taught Photographer, “Photography was like a screaming voice in my throat ready to burst out” After loosing the job he held for 6 years, he spent a long time soul searching for clarity and answers about how to apply the concept of loving what you do and getting paid for it.

2011 MODERN ATLANTA HOME TOUR

How Do You Define Your Personal Space?

Since 2007, Modern Atlanta Home Tour has inspired, entertained, and educated thousands of fans and an admiring public in love with contemporary architecture and design. The highly sought tour is also a shining example of Atlanta unleashing its creative powers for a new language of bold urbanism to the rest of the nation. Modern Atlanta Home Tour examines the full vernacular of modern residential design currently seen in Atlanta, from the cutting-edge with the use of new sustainable materials and digital technology, all the way back to the post-modern era when architecture was inspired by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles & Ray Eames. You will also witness how thoughtful architects are bringing their passion for contemporary excellence into the interiors of more traditional homes with some amazing results, and fine examples of cool conversion-projects, like that of shipping containers and barns, where both exterior and interior are interpreted to the relevant concerns and needs of today.

Perkins+Will Studio
A new addition to this year’s touring circuit, MA is excited to include commercial architecture in the mix with a tour of the very cool and newly renovated Perkins+Will studio located at 1315 Peachtree Street with breathtaking views of Atlanta High Museum of Art and the Midtown skyline. 1315 is an outstanding example of architecture for the people and represents P+W strong commitment to bold sustainable design, putting Atlanta on a clear path to zero carbon emissions.

There is plenty to be excited about for 2011 and our knowledgeable MA volunteers are at your disposal to help guide you and answer questions. On behalf of our proud sponsors, we look forward to seeing you in June!

2011 MA’ology Africa

This year’s MA’ology Africa is about inspiration, fresh perspectives, and is special because for the first time we journey to a different Africa, one that is contemporary, international, and sophisticated. This event celebrates Africa’s path to success and prosperity. MA’ology Africa represents new instincts and this massive continent’s inner beauty and creative culture interpreted by some of the world’s top designers.

Jeffrey knows MA’ology. In fact, each year since 2008, Jeffrey was there exciting our audiences with all the cutting-edge fashion and accessories seen on our runway shows. In curating MA’ology Africa, Jeffrey will showcase collections that are bold and courageous, ranging from the beautiful jewelery of acclaimed eco jewelry designer Monique Pean to the Spring/Summer collections from the likes of Prada, Lanvin, Dries Van Noten, Marni, and other top designer brands.
www.jeffreynewyork.com

Lanvin 2011 Spring Collection, photography by Yannis Vlamos, all fashion courtesy Jeffrey New York/Atlanta

And now in its fourth successful year and firmly established as the hottest underground ticket in Atlanta, MA-ology is many things. It is excellence, its international, its design, its fashion, its art, and it is edgy. But most importantly, it is about giving, sharing and caring for others, especially women and children in need and whose lives are the inspiration and motivation behind MA-ology each year.

Talking about or critiquing Art is something that always came easy to Quazi but he had no idea he posses the ability to create Art. King is a self taught Photographer, “Photography was like a screaming voice in my throat ready to burst out” After loosing the job he held for 6 years, he spent a long time soul searching for clarity and answers about how to apply the concept of loving what you do and getting paid for it.

All that changed when he picked up a DSLR camera to photograph an event and later posted the photos so that everyone in the event could see them. “I’m a young work in progress, follow my journey”.
www.quazimottoonwax.com/

Presscott McDonald

MA’ology Africa delights in welcoming acclaimed fashion and celebrity photographer Presscott McDonald. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Presscott now lives and raises his family in Miami, Florida. After attending the Savannah
College of Art & Design, he was offered an internship with renowned photographer, Annie Leibovitz.

While working in New York City, he instantly began to feed off of it’s hustle and bustling energy. His love for the Big Apple inspired him to shoot fashion and many celebrity icons for various publications. Known for being quite personable, lighting tech savvy and easy to work with, he has always gotten the job done.
African, Photography by Presscott McDonald

The direction of Presscott’s new personal work leads him to explore the forgotten and unrecognized of modern society. He will present “Nigeria’s Lost Boys” project, a documentary work featured at MA’ology Africa and later in the coming year. The show is strikingly curated by the talented Donnamarie Baptiste, an independent curator that works predominantly in the contemporary art world.

The images depict the commonalities all Nigerians share with the young boys detained in juvenile detention centers such as the Brostal Remand Centre. Brostal is one of three facilities in Nigeria that house its under age law breakers and abandoned boys. The facilities lack both the proper personal health and educational needs to reform the
misguided adolescence.

Commissioned by the non profit organization,Global Network for Humanity, Presscott closely documented their efforts to determine, address, and fix pressing issues that threaten Nigerian’s family structure. The G.N.F.H. plans to help by creating a better health system in Nigeria’s rural areas where many of these boys come from. Creating clean water options, more job opportunities, and true education for the children’s futures are only a few of the goals they seek.

Donnamarie Baptiste
Donnamarie Baptiste is a contemporary art professional based in Miami, FL. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, she considers home the Virgin Islands, New York City and Florida. Passionate about art, she is the Events/Production Manager for Art Basel Miami Beach. As an independent curator, Donnamarie organizes cutting edge exhibitions and events bringing together art, music, video and performance. Besides art, her interests include music of various genres, fashion, animals and vegetarian cooking.
