Dencity’s Staffan Svenson and Bryan Russell
Prior to starting Dencity, Bryan and Staffan were first tennis partners. Both are former varsity college players, at Mississippi State and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, respectively. Out of this grew a friendship, and for many years, they lived as neighbors in the in-town Atlanta neighborhood, Grant Park. Dencity was started in 2000 as a small, urban focused firm. Their first project was an affordable housing project in the University Center district of Atlanta, Georgia. Since then, Dencity has grown to design a diverse body of work including office and restaurant interiors, private residences, and multi-family residences.

While a majority of their work is in the Atlanta area, they have designed residential interiors in the New York City Time Warner Building and vacation homes in the north Georgia Mountains and on the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.

Atlanta, Georgia
Co-sponored by MA, YAF Atlanta (Young Architects Forum), AIA Atlanta, and Octane Coffee Lounge, the 2011 10Up! Competition winner, Edge Condition, was a huge success and featured on top design websites including designboom, dezeen, and archdaily, a first at this level in recognizing cutting-edge Atlanta-based architecture and design. According to Bernard MCoy, founding partner at MA, “being recognized in this manner is indeed a huge honor for the city of Atlanta and for the sponsors of Edge Condition. Additionally, congratulations to Synecdoche for delivering the city an icon structure that has quickly gathered international attention. We are extremely proud of Edge Condition in how it speaks volumes to bold contemporary architecture making its way to Atlanta.”

Edge Condition

factoid: to challenge 10UP applicants and feed the public’s fascination with bold architecture and design excellence, all 10UP qualifying projects have to be inhabitable and be constructed within 24 Hours/dismantled within 24 Hours

Utilizing a by-product material as a means of invoking the temporary pavilion with a temporary material wood edges cut from hardwood boards give a standardized object to build upon creating a field in which to inhabit. By operating on the edge of definitive material, neither board nor wood chip, the wood edge becomes the temporal object between two phases.

In the same light the pavilion offers the capacity to be an edge condition of construction. The methodical mode of stacking and maneuvering the edges is in itself on the edge of a mode of construction. The flat stacking method gives way to opportunities for expansion and contraction of the volume between the material. The variable of stacking techniques allow for light to move into the pavilion only through the spaces between the edges transforming the edge condition into an ephemeral effect.

The standardized one inch thick wood edge and weight of the hardwood compress the stack into a inhabitable nest stabilized by its dimension and assembly. While dis-assembly is the reverse operation, the disposal of the material is a process of returning the wood edges to the hardwood mill as to re enter the recycling process that would otherwise take place.

As fresh designers we are growing with our work. Beginning with small scale architectural interventions, we work in a fast and nimble environment as a production technique. Architecture creates opportunities to work on multiple scales with the same discipline. Our belief is that every tangible object and experiential space is a design problem. From the minute scale of a business card to the immense scale of an urban infrastructural investigation, design is an all encompassing discipline. As young designers in a young office, we have taken the optimistically naive approach that anything is possible and we would love to design anything. Every project gives us the opportunity to learn more about ourselves and the direction of the office. We learn and receive as much out of a project as our clients do. We are not trying to reinvent the wheel by learning how to run an office without the office experience. Instead we are inventing our own model of design that works for our personalities, discussions and lifestyle and fusing that with the needs of our clients and the possibilities architecture presents in design.

Lisa and Adam both hold Master’s degrees in Architecture from Taubman College at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, and Bachelor’s degrees in Architecture from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI. Lisa was recently awarded the Sarah Marian Parker Award as the outstanding woman M.Arch degree candidate of 2011. She is continuing her academic research on contingent issues latent to architectural endeavors. Adam’s current interests focus on large scale infrastructural landscapes as well as material resource and assembly techniques.

2011 MODERN ATLANTA HOME TOUR

How Do You Define Your Personal Space?

Since 2007, Modern Atlanta Home Tour has inspired, entertained, and educated thousands of fans and an admiring public in love with contemporary architecture and design. The highly sought tour is also a shining example of Atlanta unleashing its creative powers for a new language of bold urbanism to the rest of the nation. Modern Atlanta Home Tour examines the full vernacular of modern residential design currently seen in Atlanta, from the cutting-edge with the use of new sustainable materials and digital technology, all the way back to the post-modern era when architecture was inspired by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles & Ray Eames. You will also witness how thoughtful architects are bringing their passion for contemporary excellence into the interiors of more traditional homes with some amazing results, and fine examples of cool conversion-projects, like that of shipping containers and barns, where both exterior and interior are interpreted to the relevant concerns and needs of today.

Perkins+Will Studio
A new addition to this year’s touring circuit, MA is excited to include commercial architecture in the mix with a tour of the very cool and newly renovated Perkins+Will studio located at 1315 Peachtree Street with breathtaking views of Atlanta High Museum of Art and the Midtown skyline. 1315 is an outstanding example of architecture for the people and represents P+W strong commitment to bold sustainable design, putting Atlanta on a clear path to zero carbon emissions.

There is plenty to be excited about for 2011 and our knowledgeable MA volunteers are at your disposal to help guide you and answer questions. On behalf of our proud sponsors, we look forward to seeing you in June!

MA TALKS & ATLANTA HIGH MUSEUM presents Minsuk Cho, Founding Architect at MASS STUDIES

Minsuk Cho, the founding architect of Mass Studies, will give a lecture on their past and present projects.

Mass Studies was founded in 2003 by Minsuk Cho in Seoul, Korea, as a critical investigation of architecture in the context of mass production, intensely over-populated urban conditions, and other emergent cultural niches that define contemporary society. Amid the many frictions defining spatial conditions in the twenty-first century, namely past vs. future, local vs. global, utopia vs. reality, and individual vs. collective, Mass Studies focuses on the operative complexity of these multiple conditions instead of striving for a singular, unified perspective. For each architectural project, which exist across a wide range of scales, Mass Studies explores issues such as spatial systems/matrices, building materials/techniques, and typological divergences to foster a vision that allows the discovery of new socio/cultural potential.

Korea Pavilion
The World Expo 2010, held in Shanghai, China, is expected to be the largest world expo to date. The theme of the exposition will be “Better City, Better Life,” and the event is to take place from May 1 until October 31, 2010, with more than 192 participating countries to accommodate the 70 million expected visitors.

The Korea Pavilion is situated in Zone A, directly neighboring the Japan Pavilion and the Saudi Arabia Pavilion, and in close proximity to the China Pavilion. The site is around 6000m2, and it is one of the largest lots within the Expo compound. Located on the perimeter of the zone, the site takes advantage of the views out towards the Huangpu River and the Shanghai skyline in the distance.

With land culture (China) and sea culture (Japan) surrounding the peninsula, Korea has been permeable to imported cultures and global influences, whose progressive mix defines contemporary Korean society. Using ‘convergence’ as the main theme, the Korea Pavilion is an amalgamation of ‘sign’ (symbol) and ‘space’: Signs become spaces, and simultaneously, spaces become signs.

Ann Demeulemeester Shop in Seoul, Korea

Ann Demeulemeester Shop
The site is located in an alley, at a block’s distance from Dosandae-ro – a busy thoroughfare in Seoul’s Gangnam district – in close proximity to Dosan Park. Primarily residential in the past, the neighborhood is undergoing a rapid transformation into an upscale commercial district full of shops and restaurants.

The building is comprised of one subterranean level and three floors above. The Ann Demeulemeester Shop is located on the first floor, with a restaurant above and a Multi-Shop in the basement.

This proposal is an attempt to incorporate as much nature as possible into the building within the constraints of a low-elevation, high-density urban environment of limited space (378㎡). The building defines its relationship between natural/artificial and interior/exterior as an amalgamation, rather than a confrontation.

Minsuk Cho, Founding Partner at MASS STUDIES, photo by Sukmu Yun

Minsuk Cho, AIA, Principal
Minsuk Cho was born in Seoul and graduated from the Architectural Engineering Department of Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea) and the Graduate School of Architecture at Columbia University (New York, USA). He began his professional career working for Kolatan/MacDonald Studio, and Polshek and Partners in New York, and later moved to the Netherlands to work for OMA. Through these jobs, he gained experience in a wide range of architectural and urban projects implemented in various locations. With partner James Slade, he established Cho Slade Architecture in 1998 in New York City to be engaged in various projects both in the U.S. and Korea. In 2003, he came back to Korea to open his own firm, Mass Studies.

Cho has received many awards, including first prize in the 1994 Shinkenchiku International Residential Architecture Competition, the Architectural League of New York’s “Young Architects Award” in 2000 for his work at Cho Slade Architecture, and two U.S. Progressive Architecture Awards (Citations) in 1999 and 2003. Boutique Monaco was named a finalist for the International Highrise Award (DAM) in 2008 and nominated again for S-trenue in 2010. Recently, the Korea Pavilion was awarded the Silver Medal by the B.I.E. in the category of Architectural Design for the World Expo 2010 Shanghai, as well as a Presidential Citation from Korea.
His work was exhibited at La Biennale di Venezia for Dalki Theme Park in 2004, and for Different but Same Houses in 2010. He was also a part of the Open House travelling exhibition from 2006 to 2008, the New Trends of Architecture in Europe and Asia Pacific 2006–2007 traveling exhibit, and has been an active lecturer and participant in symposiums worldwide.
His representative works include “Pixel House,” “Dalki Theme Park,” “Nature Poem,” “Boutique Monaco,” “Seoul Commune 2026,” “S-Trenue,” “Ann Demeulemeester Shop,” “Ring Dome,” “Xi Gallery,” and “World Expo 2010 Shanghai: Korea Pavilion.”

Designed by New York City based architecture firm, Manifesto Architecture, the Korean Pavilion for Modern Atlanta’s 2011 Design is Human Week event is an architectural celebration of Korean culture and design. The firm’s two principals, Jeeyong An and Sang Hwa Lee analyzed the high level of science and structural logic behind the design of the Korean alphabet, which consists of vowels and consonants that interdepend on each other in a very structural and tectonic manner.

Korean Pavilion concept is based on the Korean alphabet

The designers symbolically translated this logical system into a pure and symbolic installation where a field of simple and scientific structures take on various functions and nuances depending on the orientation and perspective of the viewer, just like the Korean alphabet.

The pavilion will not only be an attraction in itself, but it is also the venue in which Modern Atlanta’s exhibition on exceptional modern Korean architecture will be held. The exhibition features many projects that were selected through the “Architecture by/for/of Korea” competition, which was an open call for young and talented designers to submit work that were related to Korea in various ways. The projects were all carefully hand-picked by a prestigious international jury of practicing architects and scholars.

The pavilion is made of materials from the Lucent and Marmo line of HI-MACS® Acrylic Solid Surface which works with a high capacity material for its inherent combination of light and the unique thermoformable properties, sponsored by LG Hausys.

More on the Korean Pavilion Concept

This concept is symbolized in the Korean pavilion with its matrix of columns that not only take on a very different identity but portray different functions and spiritual nuances depending on the direction from which it is observed.

World Design Capital and Seoul, Korea

In 2010, Seoul was designated as World Design Capital (WDC) by International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid). Since Seoul has prepared various design projects for urban development ranging from education to industries, policies, facilities, and the designing of the city itself.

It all started three years ago in London.
MA visited the Hairywood public installation situated in Covent Garden Piazza, a popular tourist destination and vibrant part of central London. It soon became evident how the public embraced architecture for the people and how architecture can be fun and inspiring. Hairywood, commissioned by the Architecture Foundation, is a 6a, Eley Kishimoto collaboration, created as a temporary public space and landmark installation. Energized, MA returned to Atlanta with the goal of presenting Atlanta its own public installation, and in 2010 joined forces with YAF Atlanta which led to the creation of 10UP!

Atlanta, 2011

Each year MA (Modern-Atlanta) hosts Design Is Human, a celebration of architecture and design with a week of events in and around the city of Atlanta.

YAF (Young Architects Forum) 10UP Competition Gives Young Designers the Opportunity to Realize Built Projects that are Published

Organized by YAF Atlanta and now in its second successful year, the goal of 10UP is to design a temporary installation and to create a unique spatial experience while also complimenting the MA (Modern Atlanta) MA11 “Design is Human” event with a large scale design element accessible to hundreds of event patrons. To advocate bold contemporary architecture and design excellence throughout Atlanta in the future, YAF Atlanta is encouraging the opportunity to design and build a temporary outdoor installation. This installation will heighten the purpose and presents fresh perspectives, improving the built environment, in order to construct a more educated and encouraging public. YAF Atlanta, MA, and 10UP sponsors are proud to announce this year’s 10UP winner is EDGE CONDITION.

MA would like to give special thanks to YAF Atlanta, AIA Atlanta, 10UP Jury Panel, 10UP volunteers, Octane Coffee Bar, and all the architects and designers who submitted work to the competition.

We would love to see your images and those selected will be added to our 10UP blog. Email you images to bernard@modern-atlanta.org.

2011 10UP Winner-Edge Condition

Edge Condition, Lisa Sauve & Adam Smith, Synecdoche

Edge Condition
Lisa Sauve & Adam Smith, Synecdoche

2nd Place-Air Pavilion

Air Pavilion, Daekwon Park & Jaegeun Lim

Air Pavilion
Daekwon Park & Jaegeun Lim

The Air Pavilion was conceived as a phantasmal architecture that renders a playful experience to the event patrons as well as a landmark that provides a temporary focal point to the event and the surrounding neighborhood. The inherent concept of the project is to create an architecture of weightlessness and even more, antigravity. Balloons filled with helium, which can in fact “levitate”, was chosen for this reason as the main component to further develop this concept.

The overall form of the Air Pavilion captures the moment of the ‘balloon release event’ which provokes the joyful emotions associated with it. The sense of ‘suspending time’ will be further evoked by the slow and gentle movement of the pavilion as the wind passes by. Configuration-wise, the Air Pavilion consists of a series of floating balloons that are vertically connected together and anchored to the base plate. During the day, the base plate’s reflective surface augments the spatial environment of the pavilion and during the night, the RGB LEDs that are embedded in the base create a dramatic effect through light and color.

3rd Place-BioMASS Production

BioMASS Production, Julie Larsen, Roger Hubeli & Gale Fulton

BIOMASS Production
Julie Larsen, Roger Hubeli & Gale Fulton

Today, many North American cities can be described as ‘thin carpets of habitation’ held together by a ‘green’ matrix. This is the way Rem Koolhaas famously described Atlanta – more akin to a landscape than a classical city – identifying infrastructure and vegetation as its primary ‘contextual givens’. But what is also true is that not all landscapes are equal in the sense of their ecological performance. In fact, Atlanta, like so many other rapidly (sub)urbanizing cities has seen an overall quantitative and qualitative reduction in its urban canopy in recent decades. The former is simply a result of fewer trees being planted than are dying or being removed for new development, and the latter is a result of an over-reliance on fewer species than are necessary to maintain a resilient, heterogeneous system. Rooted in this ecological understanding of the contemporary metropolis, this project proposes an architectural intervention that increases biodiversity in the area through the creation of ‘do-it-yourself ecosystems.’ Utilizing a technology that is as yet underutilized in the United States – seed impregnated, bio-blankets – this entry expands the geography and efficacy of the architectural object/project through the popular lifestyle pursuits of shopping and gardening.

Architecturally, the form of the project is an abstraction of the interior of the massive do-it-yourself centers that now proliferate in cities across the US. Visitors to the site are invited to ‘browse’ the aisles in order to find an ecosystem that meets their particular spatial, aesthetic, and ecological needs and/or desires. Spatially, visitors mingle in the aisles, discussing their particular ecological interests and needs with other visitors – a process that stimulates an interest in a range of possible off-site tactics while simultaneously forming a sense, however fleeting, of collective action towards a larger goal. The architecture is a dynamic structure which changes radically over the course of the week-long installation period as the bio-blankets are removed by visitors. This process also promotes a dynamic experience of the space itself as transparency increases as a result of blanket extractions and contributes to a constantly shifting visual and spatial configuration. Materially, the project extends beyond mere building components and incorporate aspects of the biophysical world such as flora, fauna, and ecosystems into the material territory of architecture.

Ultimately, the project acts as a prototype for a much larger project in which architecture’s innovative and organizational capacities are demonstrated across three distinct scales. At the scale of the site, the architecture organizes affect and commodity. At the middle scale of neighborhood, architecture organizes a new mosaic of ecological landscapes. Finally, at the metropolitan scale, architecture organizes a new bio-physical infrastructure which is a crucial part of the resilient city of the 21st century.

More on 10UP!

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
Special care should be taken in the selection of materials and construction techniques as those that can be prefabricated and assembled quickly (must be assembled within 24 hrs prior to the MA11 “Design is Human” Kickoff and disassembled within 24 hrs of MA11 “Design is Human” Closing) with simple tools and an assembly crew. Modularity is encouraged as pieces and parts of the project should be able to be moved and carried by one or two individuals. Consideration should also be given to the possibility of assembly/disassembly so the installation could potentially be reassembled in other locations in the future.

BUILDABLE AREA

No more then a 10’-0” x 10’-0” footprint within the site constrains allowed. The height is to be determined by the participant, but all aspects of public safety should be taken into account! The work should be able to stand independently while incorporating safety provisions as defined by local codes. Entries MUST take into account the process of assembly, takedown, portability and transportability. Natural elements can be considered in the design. Although not a requirement, participants are encouraged to engage materiality (the theme of MA11 “Design is Human”/”Design is Material”) and innovative program types.

Along with the building’s prime location, 1315 was chosen over other possible sites because of its relevant design challenge of reusing an existing building. Additionally, 30% of Perkins+Will employees commute by walking, bicycling, using mass transit and carpooling, all of which contributes to reducing carbon emissions and an improved quality of life.

Existing buildings currently emit 49% of CO2, the most common greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. The impact of
converting existing buildings into energy-efficient buildings with ambitious performance goals supports P+W’s commitment to its 2030 Challenge and reduces the site’s environmental footprint.

The building was deconstructed, revealing the concrete structure and diverting over 80% of the furnishings, finishes and
demolition debris from landfills. P+W matched materials for reuse with local needs, resulting in donations to over 20 non-profit organizations and demonstrates how current technologies can achieve the highest LEED Platinum Certification rating and help reduce toxic materials from building products. It is also a living example of how design can continue to contribute to the healthy growth and development of work, employees and community.

About Living Architectures

Living Architectures is a series of films that seek to develop a way of looking at architecture which turns away from the current trend of idealizing the representation of our architectural heritage. The cult of perfect, disembodied forms entirely devoid of people, inevitably leads to a breakup between architecture and living space.

Through these films, Ila Beka and Louise Lemoine put into question the fascination with the picture, which covers up the buildings with preconceived ideas of perfection, virtuosity and infallibility, in order to demnstrate the vitality, fragility, and vulnerable beauty of architecture as recounted and witnessed by people who actually live in, use or maintain the spaces they have selected. Thus, their intention is to talk about architecture, or rather to let architecture talk to us, from an “inner” point of view, both personal and subjective.

Unlike most movies about architecture, these films focus less on explaining the building, its structure and its technical details than on letting the viewer enter into the invisible bubble of the daily intimacy of some icons of contemporary architecture.>br>
Through a series of moments and fragments of life, an unusually spontaneous portrait of the building would emerge. This experient presents a new way of looking at architecture which broadens the field of its representation.

As part of Design Is Human week, MA presents a series of four short films and clips highlighting the trailblazing architecture of BIG. Bjarke Ingels also appears in the Kaspar Astrup Schröder film, MY PLAYGROUND, which debuts in Atlanta at the Plaza Theater (details at bottom) as part MA’s collaboration with Objective Cinema.

Bjarke Ingels started BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) in 2005, after co-founding PLOT Architects in 2001 and working at OMA in Rotterdam. Through a series of award-winning design projects and buildings, Bjarke Ingels has created an international reputation as a member of a new generation of architects that combines shrewd analysis, playful experimentation, social responsibility and humor.

Loop City

7 minutes
The industrial areas in the Copenhagen suburbs are next in line for urban development. A new light rail is planned to interconnect 20 development zones with a total area of 11 Km2, the size of the entire inner city. BIG propose to turn the light rail line into a spine of dense urbanity with a series of peaks at the stations.

By combing the rail with strategies for energy exchange, waste management, water treatment and electric car stations, the infrastructure could become the base for a new sustainable ring of development around Copenhagen, and an artery of true urbanity pumping life into the heart of the suburbs. At certain points the rail becomes a building itself almost like a Roman aqueduct passing through the suburbs, at other points it forms small pockets of urbanity around the stations.

courtesy BIG

BIG propose to upgrade the planned light rail by extending it to form a regional ring around Oresund connecting similar development areas, and creating a new 50 year development perspective for a cross border between Sweden and Denmark. Where the Finger Plan from 1947 was about connectivity from suburb to center, the Loop City is linking a string of highly differentiated urban nodes universities and working spaces in a center-less metropolitan region around a blue void. This ring, comparable in size to San Francisco Bay area, has enough development areas to contain the growth of the region the next 50 years, and could become a model for sustainable, dense and super recreational development of the region.

XPO Bike Ride

3.5 minutes
Bjarke Ingels, takes us on a bike ride tour of the Danish Pavilion. BIG reintroduce the bicycle in Shanghai as a symbol of modern lifestyle and sustainable urban development. The Danish Pavilion and the entire exhibition can be experienced on Danish designed city bikes that are free for the guests to use. The building is designed as a double spiral with pedestrian and cycle lanes taking you from the ground and through curves up to a level of 12 meters and down again. In this way you can experience the Danish exhibition both inside and outside at two speeds — as calm stroll with time to absorb the surroundings or as a bicycle trip, where the city and city life drift past.

MTN (Mountain)- MY PLAYGROUND

4.5 minutes
MY PLAYGROUND is a film by acclaimed Danish film-maker, Kaspar Astrup Schröder about the popular extreme sport Parkour. The goal of Parkour is to move through urban space in as little time as possible. In this short film, BIG’s award-winning architecture, MTN (Mountain), is featured “guerrilla style” in Parkour fashion.

The Mountain Dwellings are the 2nd generation of the VM Houses - Same client, same size and same street. The program, however, is 2/3 parking and 1/3 living. What if the parking area became the foundation of the homes - like a concrete hillside covered by a thin layer of housing, cascading from the 1st to the 11th floor? Rather than doing two separate buildings next to each other- a parking and a housing block - BIG decided to merge the two functions into a symbiotic relationship. The parking area needs to be connected to the street and the homes require sunlight, fresh air and a view, thus all apartments have roof gardens facing the sun, amazing views and street parking on the 10th floor. The Mountain Dwellings appear as a suburban neighborhood of garden homes flowing over a 10-story building - suburban living with urban density.

8HOUSE

15.5 minutes, English Subtext
8HOUSE is located in Southern Orestad on the edge of the Copenhagen Canal and with a view of the open spaces of Kalvebod Faelled. It is a big house in the literal sense of the world. A house offering homes in all its bearings for people in all of life’s stages: young and old, nuclear families and singles, families that grow and families that become smaller. The bow-shaped building creates two distinct spaces, separated by the center of the bow which hosts the communal facilities of 500 m2. At the very same spot the building is penetrated by a 9 meter wide passage that connects the two surrounding city spaces: The park area to the west and the channel area to the east. Instead of dividing the different functions of the building- for both habitation and trades- The apartments are placed at the, while the commercial program unfolds at the base of the building. As a result the different horizontal layers have achieved a quality of their own: The apartments benefit from sunlight, fresh air and the view, while the office leases merge with life on the street.
